With great sadness, the Blues family mourns the loss of Nancy Mirikitani and our hearts go out to her loving husband Frank. A shining light who had as much influence as any player throughout the Club’s history in building the loyal, loving, and passionate culture of the KC Blues, Nancy passed away on Friday evening, August 21st. Frank, as always, was devotedly by her side.

Nancy will be missed by her countless friends for her sense of humor, her smile, her kind heart, and her irrepressible spirit.

Frank and Nancy Mirikitani

Nancy was born in Kansas City MO on Feb 17, 1942. Nancy married Frank Mirikitani on June 9, 1966 and they were very devoted to each other for over 49 years. She graduated with a BA from Avila College and she earned her MA from Webster University. Nancy taught the elementary grades in the Shawnee Mission School District: Flint, Ray Marsh and Roesland. She touched the lives of countless children in her 30 plus years in education as teacher, librarian and student teacher supervisor for Kansas State University.

When she wasn’t teaching, she and Frank traveled. Their experiences were legendary. They chased puffins in Labrador, saw Nelson Mandela in person at the 1995 Rugby World Cup, explored the Tiger Balm Gardens in Hong Kong, danced at the Leisure Suit Convention in Des Moines, sat near the Clintons at the US Marine Evening Parade, swam with a whale shark in the Caribbean, witnessed the largest fruit bat colony in Brisbane, toured Machu Picchu, ran from elephants in So. Africa, watched Jonny Wilkinson win the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Sydney, observed a space shuttle launch at Cape Canaveral, gaped at sumo wrestlers in training in Fukuoka, Japan, rocked the night away with “young” Elvis in Vegas and then many years later with the Rolling Stones in Wichita.

Nancy was known for her love for Frank. You couldn’t have a Frank without a Nancy as they were always together. Also, she had a keen sense of affection and loyalty to her close friends most of whom she met through her affiliation with the Kansas City Blues Rugby Club, Roesland School and Lake Dabinawa.

Nancy is proceeded in death by her parents. She is survived by husband Frank and her sister, Marilyn Sexton of Denver.
