05.12.13 - Jr. Blues and St. Thomas Aquinas Win State

Congratulations to our local High School teams on another successful season. Three area programs in particular went on to greater accolades at the National Invitational Tournament in Elkhart, IN on May 16, 17, and 18th.

After winning their 6th Kansas State Championship, St. Thomas Aquinas went 2-1 in the Combination Bracket, dropping their opening round matchup to Brownsburg (IN), defeating LaSalette (IL), and then defeating a strong Park Hill South team 22-21 to finish in 5th Place. Park Hill, for their part, finished a great year in which they placed 2nd at the Missouri State Championships and defeated Grand Rapids Catholic (MI) at Nationals.

The Jr. Blues participated in the Club Bracket at Nationals, going 1-2 en route to a 6th place finish in a very tough division. After losing to eventual Champions United (UT) in the opening round, the Jr. Blues defeated Westerville (OH), before falling to the San Diego Mustangs (CA) in their last match.

Congratulations on an awesome performance at Nationals to Tim Kluempers and his staff at Aquinas that includes former Blues player Pete Kowalski, and to Eddie Cummings and his staff with the Jr. Blues that includes former Blues players John Franklin, Chris Lawler, Brian O’Laughlin, and Chuck McKeon.

Former Blues players Paul Tripp, Matt Tanner, and Mike Schlatter ran the successful Blue Valley program this spring, while former Blues players Scott Clark, Jerry Rutherford, and Jay Allen ran the Olathe program.

Overall, a big THANK YOU to everyone inside and outside of the Blues organization that takes the time to help grow youth rugby both locally and regionally.

06.01.13 - Kelley Wilson Memorial BBQ Competition

Blues & Jr. Blues Community,
I’m reaching out to you in memory of our friend and teammate from the inaugural Jr. Blues team of 1992.  Kelley Wilson.  We lost Kelley in 1993 along with two other friends in a tragic accident. A couple of years later Kelley’s teammates started the “Kelley Wilson Memorial Rugby Tournament” which supported the Kelley Wilson Scholarship Fund.  The tournament ended, but the Scholarship Fund is still exists.  Kelley’s friends are kicking off what will hopefully be another proud tradition that will be thriving 20 years from now just like the Jr. Blues.

On June 1st the First Annual Kelley Wilson Memorial BBQ Competition will be held in the parking lot of Rockhurst High School.  We’re hopeful we’ll be able to gain the support of the Blues Community in the way of competition and donations…We need BBQ teams, but if you can’t compete your encouraged to come out and enjoy the food, fun and music!  Your support is much appreciated.

Sincerely,
Matt Gunter

The Jr. Blues are hosting the Missouri High School Rugby State Championship Tournament next weekend on May 11th & 12th at Rockhurst University’s Bourke Athletic Field.

05.04.13 - Blues drop 22-24 Heartbreaker to the Austin Blacks in Opening Round of the USA Rugby D1 National Championship Series

The Blues traveled to Austin, TX on May 4th for their opening round match of the USA Rugby D1 National Championships at Burr Field at the Austin Rugby Club.

As the 4th seed in the Regional Crossover, the Blues were considered an underdog going into the match but shouldn’t be confused as anything less than a bonafide contender after taking the top-seeded Texas Conference Champion Blacks down to the absolute wire. In a match that again came down to the last minute between the two sides, the young Blues showed the same resolve that carried them to National Quarterfinals in 2012 and within striking distance of many of the nation’s top teams this season, running in 3 second-half tries in a close 22-24 loss at Austin.

Trailing 17-3 at the break, the Blues struck back with a vengeance in the 2nd half. A converted try by Nate Conkey in the 44th minute brought the score to 17-10, before Austin answered with their own 5-pointer to go up 24-10. The Blues then scored 12 consecutive points, first with a try by Kenny Scott in the middle of the half and then with a converted try by Conner Smith in the 75th minute, to bring the score to 24-22 in favor of the home side. A final shot at goal on a Blues penalty kick in the 79th minute went wide, and Austin held on for the victory.

The loss ends the Blues season, with Austin advancing to the Western bracket of the National Championships ‘Sweet 16’ tournament at Dallas, TX on May 18-19, where they’ll face Old Puget Sound Beach RFC, from Seattle WA.

Congratulations to all who made the 2012-2013 competitive season successful for the Blues. We were able to successfully field 2 full sides again throughout this entire year, and couldn’t have done so without the dedication of the players and the commitment of the Coaching Staff, including Head Coach Scott Kram, Mike Schlatter, and Pete Winklebauer.

04.21.13 - Blues defeat Denver Highlanders in final game at Conference Playoff to earn Nationals bid

The Blues traveled to Denver this past weekend for the West Northern Conference playoffs, held to get each team in the league a required 6th Conference match, and to determine qualification and seeding for the opening round of the USA Rugby D1 National Championships.

The Blues faced host Glendale Raptors on Saturday, falling 62-24. The Denver Barbarians defeated Provo 54-17 to secure the #1 seed from the North Conference, and Glendale went on to defeat Provo 79-12 on Sunday to secure the #2 seed from the North, with Provo taking the 3rd seed.

The Blues had everything to play for in their match on Sunday then, facing the Denver Highlanders for the 4th and final seed to Nationals out of the Conference. Lead by a torrid Blues attack headlined by outstanding play from Nate Conkey and Ed Mills, KC was too much for the Highlanders to handle as the Blues bounced back with a 48-16 victory to secure a bid to the USA Rugby D1 National Championships for the 5th consecutive season. Notably, Jim Eftink stepped up his play in his debut at hooker, and Chuck Henson got his first D1 start at prop, as both helped set a strong platform for the Blues.

As the #4 seed from the Conference, the Blues will travel to play Texas Conference Champions the Austin Blacks in the opening ‘Round of 32’ of the USA Rugby D1 National Championship Series on May 4th.

Winners of that matchup will advance to the Western bracket of the ‘Sweet 16’ tournament at Dallas, TX on May 18-19.

The Blues last played the Blacks in 2010, under similar circumstances. Traveling to Austin as the #3 seed from the North, the Blues were underdogs going into a match that they won on a last-minute go-ahead try to defeat their hosts, and advance to the Club’s first ‘Sweet 16’ appearance in 10 years.

04.20.13 - Home field advantage and qualification for Nationals on the line as Blues face Glendale in opening round at Conference Playoff

The Blues will travel to Denver to face Conference Tournament hosts Glendale Raptors this Saturday April 20th at Infinity Park in the opening round of the West Northern Conference playoffs. Seeding for the Conference Playoffs was set based on league record, and the top 4 finishers on the weekend will advance to the USA Rugby D1 National Championships with opening round games against the Texas Conference.

Kansas City Blues - West Division 1 North Championship

The Blues, who finished runner-up in the Conference last year, are the #4 seed going into the weekend with Glendale the #3. Winners of their match on Saturday will guarantee a place in the National Championships in May, and move on to Sunday’s round to face the losers of the match between #1 Provo vs. #2 Denver Barbarians. Winners of that Sunday matchup would earn the #2 seed from the North, securing home field advantage for the opening round of Nationals playing host to the Dallas Reds, while the loser would earn the #3 seed and travel to play the Dallas Harlequins in the opening round of Nationals. If the Blues lose to the Raptors on Saturday, they’ll instead on Sunday face the winners of the match between #5 Denver Highlanders vs. #6 Boulder. Winner of that Sunday matchup would secure the 4th and final seed to Nationals from the Conference, and travel to play the Austin Blacks in the opening round of Nationals.

FINAL Standings for the Men’s Club Division I Northern Conference (2012-2013)

  • 1) Provo Steelers
  • 2) Denver Barbarians
  • 3) Glendale Raptors
  • 4) Kansas City Blues
  • 5) Boulder
  • 6) Denver Highlanders

Glendale took a mixed side to Kansas City for a friendly Saturday and emerged with a 29-22 win. The Raptors and Blues traded barbs throughout the match, with Glendale never pulling far away.

Last time Glendale came to Kansas City with its full arsenal, the Blues tied them, so the Raptors knew they were in for a fight.

“Kansas City at their home ground is always a tough game,” said Glendale coach Andre Snyman. “The guys play with passion and we try to just break their little voodoo doll. As you can see, right until the end it was anybody’s game.”

Glendale’s Cody Melphy and Kansas City’s Kelly Mercer swapped penalties to open the contest. Then Glendale scrumhalf Bradley Winbush made a big break in open field play, darting around several tacklers before offloading to Mike Kenyon for the try. Melphy converted, putting Glendale up 10-3.

The Blues answered back with some broken play creativity of their own, flyhacking a loose ball in Glendale’s end into the try zone and jumping on it for the score. Mercer converted, knotting the game at 10-10. Full Article at Rugby Mag »

03.30.13 - Blues Alumni Night This Saturday March 30th at Swope

We invite ALL former Blues players from over the years to come and be part of our Alumni Night at Swope! The Club will have a beer garden setup for former players, as well as food prepared. The match vs. Glendale will cap off a full day of rugby hosted by the Blues at Swope – come see any or ALL of it next Saturday!

The Denver Barbarians struggled to a 10-0 win over the Kansas City Blues Saturday at Swope Park in Kansas City, Mo. The game was played in the heart of a thick snowfall, with flakes growing larger and accumulating throughout the contest.

The Barbos drew first blood midway through the opening half when Maximo DeAachaval slotted a penalty kick, putting Denver on top 3-0.

The entire game was filled with knock-ons, scrums, mishandles and slipped-up ball carriers. Weather forced both teams to kick for territory, rather than run for it, and the Barbos were able to chase and pressurize the opposition better than Kansas City. Full Article at Rugby Mag »
