07.06.13 - Olympic Rugby Sevens returned to Kansas City on July 6th, and the host Kansas City Blues showed very well by placing teams in the top 3 in all Divisions.

The Heartland 7s featured 28 teams total, with a Premier Qualifier Division, Men’s Open Division, and Boy’s High School Division, simultaneously played throughout the day in tournament format across 4 fields.  Pool play in the morning led to knock-out rounds in the afternoon, with continuous fast-paced action from 9:00am – 6:30pm to determine Champions in each Division.

The event was hosted at Legacy Soccer Park, a privately managed state-level soccer tournament venue in Lee’s Summit, MO.

The Premier Qualifier Division featured 10 very good teams with a number of outstanding athletes, as nationally ranked Men’s Clubs like the Denver Barbarians, Glendale Raptors, and Dallas Harlequins joined last year’s Heartland 7s Champions and current West Sevens Series leaders, the Kansas City Blues.  Two pools of 5 teams each played 4 rounds of round-robin rugby to start the day.  The Denver Barbarians went 3-1 to win Pool A, squeaking past the 3-1 Blues and 3-1 Harlequins to win the pool on points differential.  In Pool B, WE Rugby from Houston, TX dominated in going 4-0 to win, with the Omaha GOATS a surprise 2nd after an early upset over Glendale.  In the semi-finals, the Blues fell 24-0 to WE, but bounced back to defeat Omaha 17-12 to take 3rd place and garner all-important 2 points towards Nationals Qualification.  WE defeated Denver in the Championship, earning enough pints (6) to tie the Blues atop the Western region standings with 8 points apiece.  Denver and Glendale are both tied in 2nd, with 4 points each.

Going into the final Qualifying event of the West Sevens Series in Denver on July 20th, the Blues are still in the driver’s seat for Nationals qualification but will likely need to reach the finals at the tournament to clinch a repeat berth to the crowning event of the season.

The Men’s Open Division showcased 14 local teams, including the Blues Reserve side, Blues Brothers social side, and the Kansas City 7s Academy.  Both the Blues Reserves and KC7A went undefeated in pool play, advancing to the semifinals.  In the semi’s, the Reserves defeated Wichita in a close match, while KC7A overcame the Arkansas Gryphons in another thriller.  In the final the Blues Reserves took a 24-0 halftime lead over KC7A, and despite a strong comeback from the Academy team the Reserves held on for the victory and Division Championship.

In the Boy’s High School Division, Missouri State Champions KC Jr. Blues Club went undefeated on the day, earning a 5-0 record as they defeated Kansas State Champions St. Thomas Aquinas Saints in the Championship match.
At 4:00pm, fans were treated to a 20-minute exhibition by the children of Heartland Youth Rugby, as kids 2nd-8th grade played a series of flag rugby matches.

06.22.13 - The Blues take Championship at West Qualifier in Houston, TX, in driver’s seat for repeat Nationals berth

The West Sevens Series kicked-off this past weekend June 22nd in Houston, TX, with the first stop on the three-tournament Series hosted by the Woodlands Exiles. The Blues, who finished 2nd in the West last summer, defeated the Glendale Raptors in the Championship game to win the 12-team event.

The Blues handled the Dallas Reds 28-5 in their opening Pool Round match, but dropped their second Pool game to the Dallas Harlequins, setting them up for a tough Quarterfinal draw. The boys bounced back in the QF however, defeating tournament favorites Denver Barbarians 21-10 and generating a lot of momentum going into the Semifinals. In the Semi’s, the Blues faced off against tournament host Woodlands Express, and never let them in the game en route to a 33-7 victory. With injury whittling the Blues down to only 8 players through the bracketed rounds, exceptional defense and smart attacking play saw the Blues hold off Glendale in a methodical Championship victory, 17-5.

The Championship gives the Blues an early Series lead with 6 overall qualification points. The Glendale are in 2nd place with 4 points, Woodlands Exiles with 2, and the Dallas Harlequins with 1. At the end of the three-event West Sevens Series, the two teams with most qualification points advance to represent the Region at the Club 7s National Championships in Pittburgh, PA on August 10th – 11th.

07.02.13 - Q&A with KC Blues Rugby Club - sportingkc.com

  Sporting Kansas City

Kansas City Blues Rugby Club, a Sporting Club Network member, have been extremely active recently in promoting their organization as they are increasing the popularity of rugby throughout the Midwest region. Out of the Blue had the opportunity to sit down with Eric Munninghoff, who has been a member of the club since 2003, and learn more about this franchise as they are set to host the first ever Heartland Qualifier 7's tournament this weekend at Legacy Park in Lee's Summit, Missouri.

Explain the popularity of the sport in the Midwest, and what component of your club is influential to continue its current growth?
Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Specifically in Kansas City, youth rugby is booming in high schools and youth clubs. Exposure is the biggest influencer, the more exposure we get on social media, the internet and TV, the better for our growth.

What was the main motivation behind the birth of the KC Blues Academy system?
The Blues wanted to create an Academy that would develop high school and college aged rugby players, ages 18-23, who are not yet senior Blues members. We wanted to create a central place that players from schools throughout the heart of America could come and grow their knowledge and skill base in the game of 7's rugby.

06.15.13 - The Blues win at Fountain City 7s with 2 sides advancing to the semi-finals

The Blues entered 2 sides in the 8-team Fountain City 7s at Rockhurst University’s Bourke Athletic Field this past Saturday, June 15th, fielding a Premier side, and an Academy side (KC7A) in the local event. A number of Blues also suited up for UMKC.

Sweeping their 3 pool games with wins over KC United, UMKC, and KSU/Ft. Riley, the Premier side advanced to the semi-finals unchallenged. The KC7A side also showed well in their pool, going 2-1 with wins over KC United and Topeka, but losing to a strong Omaha GOATS team.

In a repeat of last weekend’s Iowa Sevens, the Blues drew KC7A in the semi-finals. However, unlike last weekend’s one-sided affair, KC7A put immediate pressure on the Blues and didn’t let up, using physicality in the breakdown and stifling defense to their advantage, carrying a 10-7 lead into halftime over the Premier side. The Blues were able to keep their composure late, with trys scored from Kenny Scott and Connor McDonough to notch the win and move on to the Finals. The GOATs defeated KC United in the other semi-final.

The Championship Final of the tournament between the Blues and GOATS was never played, as torrential down pours forced a cancellation minutes before kick-off. The Kansas City Blues won the tournament via point differential.

07.13.13 - Tim Kluempers, selected to Coach in the USA Rugby High School All-American Game

USA Rugby has selected Blues HOF Member and current Head Coach of Saint Thomas Aquinas Saints RFC Tim Kluempers to the Coaching Staff for the High School All-American (HSAA) Stars vs. Stripes game and camp this coming July. This inaugural event will be a chance for the best 50 boys and 50 girls from around the country to become a part of the newly unveiled HSAA pathway, as well as serve as an entry point for coaches and referees into USA Rugby’s High Performance development model.

Four teams will attend a four-day camp culminating in the final games on July 13. Each team will be led by two coaches who will be mentored by our USA Rugby Coaching Department and National Team Coaching staff, and Tim has been selected as 1 of the 8 coaches. The event will be a personal development opportunity for these eight coaches as well as a chance to learn team management skills, coaching best practices, and observation and selection techniques from elite level coaches.

Congratulations to Tim for being appointed to this elite opportunity, and best of luck representing Aquinas, Rugby Kansas, and the Blues as you continue your promising career in Coaching!

06.08.13 - Kansas City Blues win Des Moines Iowa Sevens Rugby Series

The Blues traveled to Des Moines, IA on June 8th for the first tournament of the 2013 7s Season, taking two sides to the Midwestern Region pre-season event. The Blues fielded a Premier side, and also introduced the Kansas City 7s Academy team at the tournament, both coming home with hardware as the Premier side won the Championship and KC7A took 3rd.

The Premier side dominated Pool Play, going undefeated in 2 games and outscoring their opponents 89-0. In the Quarterfinals, they advanced past Iowa Falls RFC 42-5, en route to the Semifinals.

The KC7A side, a newly formed initiative by the Blues, featured a lineup of collegiate rugby players who are not yet full-time Blues players but have been training and playing alongside the Blues 7s team this summer and was captained by Truman State's David McDonough. KC7A also went undefeated in Pool Play, beating NE Iowa and Iowa Falls by wide margins, and tying Des Moines. In the Quarterfinals, KC7A overcame an experienced Bremer County RFC side 14-5 to advance to the Semifinals.

Luck of the draw pitted the Blues Premier side against KC7A in the Semifinals, which the Premier side won. In the 3rd place match KC7A enacted revenge over Des Moines, shutting out the hosts 26-0 en route to hardware. In the Championship match, the Premier side was too much for Iowa City RFC, winning 36-0 behind 3 tries from Ed Mills.
